LEWIS HAMILTON (41) pobjednik je Velike nagrade Katalonije u dramatičnoj utrci. Ferrarijev vozač do svoje je prve pobjede ove godine stigao zahvaljujući sjajnoj strategiji i preokretu koji je omogućio virtualni sigurnosni automobil, ali i šokantnom odustajanju vodećeg u prvenstvu Kimija Antonellija pred sam kraj utrke. Na postolju su mu se pridružili George Russell na drugom i Lando Norris na trećem mjestu.
Utrka je započela dominacijom Mercedesa, s Georgeom Russellom koji je s pole positiona uspješno obranio prvo mjesto ispred Lewisa Hamiltona i Kimija Antonellija. Najveći gubitnik starta bio je Isack Hadjar, koji je pao s petog na trinaesto mjesto. Već u šestom krugu viđeno je prvo odustajanje kada je Lance Stroll parkirao bolid u garaži zbog problema s mjenjačem.

Prvi veći strateški potez povukao je Ferrari, pozvavši Hamiltona u boks već u 12. krugu. Mercedes je odmah reagirao i krug kasnije na promjenu guma poslao Russella, koji je uspio zadržati poziciju na stazi ispred Hamiltona.
U tim trenucima na stazi se odvijala i žestoka borba za šesto mjesto, iz koje je nakon dva kruga kao pobjednik izašao Charles Leclerc prestigavši Oscara Piastrija. Do 17. kruga vodeća sedmorka odradila je svoja prva zaustavljanja, a poredak je bio Russell, Hamilton, Antonelli, Norris, Verstappen, Leclerc i Piastri.
Borba unutar Mercedesa i ključni trenutak utrke
Kako se utrka bližila polovici, Antonelli i Norris smanjivali su zaostatak za vodećim dvojcem. Hamilton je ponovno rano otišao u boks u 28. krugu, no Mercedesovi vozači ovaj put nisu pratili njegovu taktiku. To je dovelo do interne borbe u Mercedesu, gdje je Antonelli stigao na manje od sekunde zaostatka za vodećim Russellom.
U 34. krugu Antonelli je u prvom zavoju pokušao preuzeti vodstvo, no pritom je izletio sa staze, zbog čega ga je momčad upozorila da pripazi jer već ima opomenu. Russell je uskoro otišao u boks, a krug za njim i Antonelli, prepustivši vodstvo Hamiltonu.
Ključni trenutak dogodio se u 41. krugu, kada je Fernando Alonso stao na stazi, što je izazvalo virtualni sigurnosni automobil. Hamiltonova momčad to je iskoristila za brzu promjenu guma, nakon koje se vratio na stazu kao vodeći, ispred Russella i s najsvježijim gumama.

Šok u završnici i Hamiltonovo slavlje
Iako su suci kratko istraživali Hamiltonov potez pod žutim zastavama, odlučeno je da neće biti kazne. Britanac je na novijim gumama stvorio sigurnu prednost, dok se iza njega odvijala prava drama. Petnaestak krugova prije kraja formirala se borba za drugo mjesto između Russella, Antonellija i Norrisa. U 61. krugu Antonelli je sjajnim manevrom prestigao Russella za drugo mjesto.
Međutim, samo krug kasnije, uslijedio je šok. Vodeći u prvenstvu morao je odustati zbog kvara na bolidu. U istom je krugu zbog tehničkih problema odustao i Charles Leclerc. Ta dvostruka odustajanja promovirala su Russella na drugo, a Norrisa na treće mjesto, dok je Hamilton mirno priveo utrku kraju za svoju prvu pobjedu u Ferrariju.
Hamilton, sedmerostruki svjetski prvak, je tako upisao svoju prvu pobjedu za Ferrari te svoju 106. u karijeri. Prvu 21 pobjedu upisao je McLaren, iduće 84 pobjede upisao je u dominantnoj eri u Mercedesu, a sad se upisao u povijesti i u legendarnom crvenom bolidu.

Osim vodećeg trojca, bodove su upisali redom Verstappen, Piastri, Hadjar, Gasly, Colapinto, Lawson i Lindblad. Utrku bez bodova završili Bortoleto, Sainz, Ocon i Perez, dok Leclerc, Antonelli, Bearman, Alonso, Albon, Hulkenberg i Bottas nisu završili utrku.
Odustajanje Antonellija imat će za posljedice za vrh poretka vozača u kojem je dosad dominirao. I dalje ima veliku prednost, no Hamilton se sad približio na 41 bod, a Russell na 50 bodova zaostatka.
