Japan: Cartel authority investigates ice cream manufacturers for suspected collusion

Japanese antitrust authorities have searched the offices of six major ice cream manufacturers, including Meiji, Morinaga Milk Industry, Lotte, Ezaki Glico, Morinaga & Co., and Akagi Nyugyo, due to suspicions of price-fixing agreements. Offenbar durchsuchten Beamte der japanischen Kartellbehörde JFTC am Dienstag die Hauptsitze der Unternehmen Meiji, Morinaga Milk Industry, Lotte, Ezaki Glico, Morinaga & Co., and Akagi Nyugyo. Die Behörde untersucht Angaben einer lokalen Nachrichtenagentur zufolge auch, ob die Firmen die Inflation ausgenutzt haben. Es besteht der Verdacht, dass sie ihre Preise stärker erhöhten als angesichts steigender Rohstoffpreise gerechtfertigt gewesen sei.

Fünf der Unternehmen veröffentlichten am Dienstag und Mittwoch Stellungnahmen mit der Bestätigung, dass ihre Büros durchsucht worden seien und erklärten, mit den Untersuchungen zu »kooperieren«. Die Unternehmenskommunikation von Akagi Nyugo bestätigte der AFP ebenso, dass das Unternehmen nach einer »Vor-Ort-Inspektion« mit den Ermittlern zusammenarbeiten werde.
