"Come motto del suo episcopato" Camillo Ruini "aveva scelto una frase ispirata al Vangelo di San Giovanni: Veritas liberabit nos, La verità ci renderà liberi ", parole che "riassumono la profonda concezione di persona che la Chiesa insegna" e che "ricordano con chiarezza un messaggio particolarmente significativo per il nostro tempo, in cui si può essere disorientati da derive relativistiche e da visioni totalmente fluide della realtà e dell'uomo".
Lo ha detto il Papa celebrando nella basilica di San Pietro le esequie del cardinale Camillo Ruini, ex Vicario di Roma ed ex presidente della Cei, scomparso martedì sera a 95 anni. Leone ha ricordato anche come Ruini abbia lasciato il segno nella Chiesa e nella società italiana con iniziative come il Progetto culturale così come ne ha sottolineato la vicinanza e la fedeltà a Giovanni Paolo II. "Presenza attiva e dialogante anche con il mondo laico - ha sintetizzato il Pontefice -, la Chiesa italiana gli deve moltissimo".
Vangelo aperto su una semplice bara di legno , 34 cardinali a concelebrare, la presenza di rappresentanti delle istituzioni come Alfredo Mantovano, la ministra Eugenia Roccella l'ex premier Romano Prodi e l'ex presidente della Camera Pier Ferdinando Casini: i funerali di Ruini si sono svolti nella solennità che era attesa. Tra i cardinali presenti presso l'altare della Cattedra, Matteo Zuppi, attuale presidente della Cei e arcivescovo di Bologna, il Segretario di Stato vaticano, il cardinale Pietro Parolin, il Vicario di Roma, Baldo Reina, e il successore alla presidenza della Cei proprio di Ruini, il cardinale Angelo Bagnasco. Una presenza dovuta ma che va ben oltre il cerimoniale.
" Camillo Ruini, pastore saggio e sollecito del gregge di Cristo ", "per molti anni ha servito la Chiesa svolgendo con la stessa dedizione sia gli incarichi più umili sia quelli più gravidi di responsabilità", ha ricordato Prevost, sottolineando che "moltissimo gli deve la Chiesa in Italia, che ha servito per circa diciassette anni come presidente della Conferenza episcopale; come pure la diocesi di Roma, in cui per altrettanto tempo ha svolto il ministero di Vicario".
" Ha saputo guidare il popolo di Dio e i fratelli nell'episcopato - ha proseguito il Pontefice - in momenti importanti e delicati, affrontando con entusiasmo, discernimento e coraggio molteplici sfide. A lui si devono intuizioni e iniziative che hanno lasciato un segno profondo nel cammino della comunità ecclesiale e anche di quella civile. Pensiamo al "Progetto culturale", all'impegno profuso nel promuovere l'apporto del mondo cattolico nei più diversi ambiti della vita religiosa, civile e politica italiana; al grande lavoro del Sinodo diocesano e della sua applicazione, qui a Roma; alla sua presenza attiva e dialogante ai vari livelli della vita della Chiesa, come pure del mondo laico e della società".
Leone ha concluso la liturgia della parola ricordando anche quanti hanno assistito Ruini negli
ultimi momenti. Il cardinale dal 21 maggio versava in condizioni critiche nella sua abitazione romana ed era assistito anche con l'ossigeno alla presenza delle fide suore che non lo hanno mai lasciato solo negli ultimi anni.
