Yliopiston hallitus on arvioinut rehtorin edellytyksiä jatkaa tehtävässään sen jälkeen, kun Maaninen käyttäytyi epäasiallisesti yliopiston tilaisuudessa.

Arto Maaninen eroaa Oulun yliopiston rehtorin tehtävästä. Hän on irtisanoutunut yliopiston palveluksesta henkilökohtaisista syistä.
Yliopisto kertoo asiasta tiedotteessaan.
Irtisanoutumisen taustalla on yliopiston hallituksen käynnissä ollut harkinta luottamuksesta rehtoria kohtaan.
Luottamusta on jouduttu arvioimaan johtuen Maanisen alkoholinkäytöstä ja epäasiallisesta käyttäytymisestä yliopiston henkilöstötilaisuudessa.
– Tilanne on yllättävä ja ikävä. Tämä ratkaisu on kuitenkin se, jolla varmistamme Oulun yliopiston arvojen ja eettisten periaatteiden noudattamisen, yliopiston hallituksen puheenjohtaja Leena Nissilä kertoo tiedotteessa.
Nissilä kertoo Ylelle, että kyseessä oli yksittäinen tilaisuus, joka tapahtui henkilöstön illanvietossa.
– En pysty tämän tarkemmin avaamaan tilannetta, koska luottamuksellisuus on meille todella tärkeää ja jotta ihmiset rohkenevat ilmoittamaan tällaisesta epäasiallisesta käyttäytymisestä jatkossakin.
– Rehtori johtaa koko yliopiston toimintaa. Silloin häneltä tulee voida edellyttää esimerkillisyyttä yliopiston arvojen ja eettisten periaatteiden mukaisessa toiminnassa ja käyttäytymisessä.
Yliopiston hallitus päätti kokouksessaan 16.6. myöntää eron rehtorin tehtävästä välittömästi.
Hallitus käynnistää rehtorin tehtävän täytön elokuussa. Hallitus nimitti yhteistyösuhteiden vararehtori Petteri Alahuhdan hoitamaan rehtorin tehtävää 16.6. alkaen uuden rehtorin aloittamiseen saakka.
Maaninen aloitti Oulun yliopiston rehtorina vuoden 2025 alussa. Hän oli toiminut aiemmin yliopiston yhteistyösuhteiden vararehtorina.
Uuden rehtorin valinta nousi otsikoihin , kun kolme yliopiston hallituksen jäsentä jätti eroilmoituksensa heti rehtorin valinnan jälkeen. Jäsenet eivät kertoneet syytä julkisuuteen.
