ŠKOTSKA je pobjedom 1:0 protiv Haitija otvorila nastup na Svjetskom prvenstvu, a prije utakmice na stadionu u Bostonu čula se pjesma koju navijači doživljavaju kao škotsku himnu. Riječ je o Flower of Scotland, jednoj od najpoznatijih sportskih himni na svijetu, iako ona formalno nije službena nacionalna himna Škotske.
Škoti, naime, nemaju službeno usvojenu vlastitu nacionalnu himnu. Budući da je Škotska dio Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva, službena državna himna je God Save the King. Međutim, škotske reprezentacije u nogometu i ragbiju već desetljećima koriste Flower of Scotland kao svoju sportsku himnu.
Što se dogodilo prije utakmice s Haitijem?
Prije utakmice Haitija i Škotske u prvom kolu Svjetskog prvenstva organizatori su pustili Flower of Scotland. To je kod dijela gledatelja otvorilo pitanje zašto nije izvedena britanska himna God Save the King, nego pjesma koja nema službeni državni status.
Odgovor je jednostavan: u sportskom kontekstu Škotska nastupa kao zasebna reprezentacija, a Flower of Scotland je de facto himna škotske nogometne reprezentacije. Zato se ona izvodi prije utakmica Škotske, iako nije zakonom proglašena službenom nacionalnom himnom.
Tko je odlučio da se koristi baš Flower of Scotland?
Flower of Scotland nije nametnuta od države, nego je kroz sport i navijačku kulturu postala škotska himna. Škotski nogometni savez prihvatio ju je kao pjesmu koja se izvodi prije utakmica reprezentacije, a u istom statusu koristi se i u ragbiju.
Škotski savez je 2015. proveo anketu među navijačima nakon rasprave u škotskom parlamentu o tome treba li Flower of Scotland službeno priznati kao nacionalnu himnu. Većina navijača bila je za to, ali ne toliko uvjerljivo da bi se pitanje potpuno zatvorilo. Savez je tada objavio da je Flower of Scotland tijesno pobijedila u izboru, što je pokazalo da je ona najpopularnija, ali i da dio Škota i dalje ima sklonost prema drugim pjesmama, poput Scotland the Brave.
Zašto Škotska nema službenu himnu?
Škotska ima zastavu, parlament, nogometnu reprezentaciju i brojne zasebne institucije, ali nema službeno usvojenu nacionalnu himnu. Škotska vlada u svojim je dokumentima navodila da bi odluka o službenoj himni trebala biti donesena tek nakon šire javne rasprave, a ne kao jednostrana politička odluka.
U škotskom parlamentu 2015. raspravljalo se o peticiji kojom se tražilo da Flower of Scotland postane službena himna. Peticija je na kraju zatvorena bez odluke. Zaključak je bio da se rasprava treba nastaviti prirodnim putem i da vlada nema plan u tom trenutku nametnuti službenu himnu. Zato Flower of Scotland danas ima neobičan status: nije službena, ali se u praksi ponaša kao da jest.

Kako je pjesma postala simbol Škotske?
Flower of Scotland napisao je Roy Williamson, član škotskog folk-dua The Corries, 1960-ih godina. Pjesma govori o pobjedi škotskog kralja Roberta Brucea nad engleskom vojskom kod Bannockburna 1314. godine, jednom od ključnih trenutaka škotske povijesti.
Upravo zbog te povijesne poruke pjesma je s vremenom postala moćan simbol škotskog identiteta. Stihovi prizivaju otpor, ponos i sjećanje na trenutak u kojem su Škoti obranili svoju zemlju. Zbog toga je posebno snažna u sportskom okruženju, gdje se pjeva prije velikih utakmica.
Kada se počela koristiti u sportu?
Flower of Scotland se prvo snažno vezala uz škotsku ragbijašku reprezentaciju. Popularizirala se na velikim ragbijaškim utakmicama, osobito početkom 1990-ih, a zatim je prešla i u nogomet. U nogometnom kontekstu počela se koristiti 1990-ih, a Škotski nogometni savez ju je prihvatio kao pjesmu koja se izvodi prije utakmica reprezentacije. Od tada je postala neizostavan dio nastupa Škotske.
Zbog toga nije bilo neobično što se čula i prije utakmice s Haitijem. Naprotiv, za škotske navijače bilo bi neobično da se nije čula.
Zašto ne God Save the King?
God Save the King službena je himna Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva, ali u nogometu Škotska ne nastupa kao dio britanske reprezentacije, nego kao zasebna nogometna nacija. Isto vrijedi i za Englesku, Wales i Sjevernu Irsku, koje također imaju vlastite reprezentacije.
Zbog toga se u sportu često koristi ono što najbolje predstavlja pojedinu reprezentaciju, a ne nužno ono što je formalno službena državna himna. U slučaju Škotske to je Flower of Scotland. God Save the King koristi se kada sportaši nastupaju za Veliku Britaniju, primjerice na Olimpijskim igrama. No kada igra Škotska, navijači očekuju Flower of Scotland.
