A portion of the roof slab of the Government Higher Primary School at Sangolgi (C) village in Aland taluk of Kalaburagi district collapsed suddenly on Sunday morning.
No one was injured as the school was closed for the weekly holiday and there were no students or teachers on the premises at the time of the incident.
The accident could have resulted in serious consequences had the school been functioning, residents said.
The incident comes close on the heels of a recent accident at the Government Pre-University Girls College in Kalaburagi which raised concern over the condition and safety of educational institution buildings across the district.
The latest roof collapse has further intensified public criticism of the neglect in the maintenance of school infrastructure by the Education Department.
Residents and parents have urged the State government to undertake an immediate inspection of old and dilapidated school buildings in the district and take necessary steps to ensure the safety of students and staff.
