Police have opened a murder investigation following the tragic death of a Grade 10 pupil at Bellville South High School, allegedly resulting from an assault by another pupil inside a classroom.
According to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the incident involved two Grade 10 pupils during what it described as a “serious and distressing incident” at the school.
The pupils sustained a fatal head injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, but died on Thursday evening (June 11).
WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond expressed condolences to the affected family and school community.
“Our condolences to the family, friends and school community for this tragic and alarming loss,” she said.
The department said the incident was reportedly linked to the alleged attempted theft of a cellphone inside the classroom. The circumstances surrounding the incident and the involvement of those concerned remain under investigation.
The school is cooperating with authorities, while the pupil accused in the matter has been suspended and will face disciplinary action. Counselling support has also been made available to pupils and staff.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed that Bellville South police have registered a murder case.
“Bellville South police registered a murder case for investigation following an incident at a secondary school in Bellville South involving two learners,” he said.
He added that the circumstances are under investigation and no arrests have been made.
The Bellville South Community Policing Forum (CPF) expressed sadness over the pupil’s death and urged the public not to speculate while investigations continue.
“The matter remains under investigation by police and is highly sensitive, particularly as minors are involved,” the CPF said.
It also condemned violence in schools and extended condolences to those affected.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic incident,” the CPF said.
No arrests had been made at the time of publishing.
