A two-year-old girl has died after a four-vehicle crash on a major arterial route in inner-city Melbourne this afternoon.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident on Dynon Road, in West Melbourne, just before 4:30pm.

Police said the little girl was in a vehicle being driven by a 30-year-old man, who was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Three passengers in the car — a 30-year-old woman, a four-year-old boy and an 11-month-old boy — are in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A man, 40, driving a second vehicle was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a 30-year-old woman driving a third car was treated for minor injuries at the scene by paramedics.

A 62-year-old man who was the sole occupant of a fourth vehicle was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
