Genk wins €35,000 for the greening of the Delcourt site in Zwartberg

The city of Genk has received a 35,000 euro award for its plans to transform the Delcourtplaist in the Zwartberg neighborhood into a greener space. The current area consists of an underused asphalt basketball court. The project aligns with Genk's heat mitigation strategy, aiming to increase green spaces throughout the city. De stad Genk krijgt een prijs voor haar plannen met de Delcourtplaats in de wijk Zwartberg. Genk wil dat plein heraanleggen en er een groenere plek van maken. "We willen overal in onze stad maximaal ontharden", zegt schepen Karel Kriekemans (CD&V).

De aanpak van de Delcourtplaats past in het hitteplan van de stad Genk. Daarmee wil de stad zo veel mogelijk plekken ontharden.

"Voor onze plannen met de Delcourtplaats hebben we nu de Ethias Solidarity Award gekregen", zegt schepen Kriekemans. "Het gaat om 35.000 euro die we nu ook in die plek kunnen investeren."

De Delcourtplaats bestaat nu uit een verhard basketveld dat amper wordt gebruikt. "Daarom willen we deze plek groener maken", aldus Kriekemans. "Zwartberg is een dichtbebouwde buurt waar we qua groene oppervlakte niet zo goed scoren."

De buurt zal mee mogen beslissen over wat er in de plaats van het basketveldje komt. "Na de zomer willen we met de wijk aan de slag gaan om deze plek weer aangenamer te maken."
