Fight for Russia, Skip the Trial: Bosnia’s Legal Loophole Exposed

The article discusses Dario Ristic, a dual citizen from Bosnia who fought in the Russian army in Ukraine. His charges in Bosnia for illegal combat abroad were dismissed due to a legal amnesty provision for dual citizens. Ristic, previously a convicted offender and athlete, was wounded and had part of his leg amputated during his service. He has since recovered and returned to Russia. The article highlights concerns that this legal loophole allows similar cases to go unpunished and suggests that Bosnian law should be updated to align with practices in other European countries.

Dario Ristic, a volunteer from Modrica in Bosnia serving in the Russian army – whose activities BIRN has long followed – is back on the battlefields in Ukraine after charges in Bosnia of fighting illegally abroad were dismissed due to a law that grants amnesty in such cases to dual citizens.

Ristic returned to Bosnia in September last year. Before that, he was wounded and amputated his own leg; he broadcast his recovery in Russia on the Internet.

BIRN discovered his identity in 2024, when we followed his journey from Modrica to Ukraine . The former athlete, convicted offender and now decorated Russian fighter, is currently, according to online posts, back in Russia.

BIRN was told that the non-prosecution of Ristic is not an isolated case, and that Bosnian law should be amended in line with the example of some other European countries.

Bias read (Center): The article presents facts about a specific individual's legal situation without overtly favoring one side. It mentions concerns about the legal loophole but does not take a clear stance on whether the law should be changed, instead suggesting it should be aligned with other European countries' laws
