O projeto de restauro a longo prazo na fachada oeste do Partenon, em Atenas, chegou ao fim, devolvendo ao monumento o seu aspeto do início do século XIX, adiantou na quinta-feira, 18 de junho, o Ministério da Cultura grego.

Este templo com 2500 anos, dedicado à deusa Atena e situado numa colina com vista para a capital grega, recebe mais de quatro milhões de visitantes por ano.

"Hoje, contemplamos a fachada oeste do Partenon como não a víamos há dois séculos", frisou a ministra da Cultura, Lina Mendoni, em comunicado.

"Pela primeira vez em aproximadamente 220 anos, o lado oeste do Partenon está a ser apresentado pelo Ministério da Cultura na sua forma mais completa possível (...), a vista é verdadeiramente deslumbrante", acrescentou.

Segundo o ministério, uma equipa de arqueólogos, engenheiros e artesãos utilizou tanto fragmentos antigos preservados como mármore novo para preencher lacunas e reforçar a fachada oeste do monumento.

Segundo a mesma fonte, o templo está agora o mais próximo possível — embora com réplicas das esculturas — do estado em que se encontrava imediatamente após a remoção de cerca de metade das suas estátuas preservadas, por ordem de Lord Elgin, embaixador britânico no Império Otomano.

Londres insiste que as esculturas, posteriormente vendidas por Elgin ao Museu Britânico, foram adquiridas legalmente, e os sucessivos governos britânicos têm afirmado que a decisão cabe ao museu.

O Museu Britânico negoceia há algum tempo com as autoridades gregas para encontrar uma forma de expor os mármores em Atenas.

O primeiro-ministro grego, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, também tem procurado, repetidamente, discutir esta questão com os seus homólogos britânicos.

Fragmentos de esculturas do Partenon estão também conservados no Museu do Louvre, em Paris, bem como em Copenhaga, Munique, Viena e Würzburg.
