Restoration of Parthenon’s western facade completed

Restoration work on the western pediment of the Parthenon has been completed, with the removal of scaffolding marking a significant milestone in the ongoing preservation efforts of the 5th-century BC temple on the Acropolis. The project involved placing two upright stone elements and completing restoration on a supporting wall structure, restoring the architectural unity of the pediment. Officials stated that the western facade is now in its most complete form in approximately 220 years. Future restoration efforts aim to use smaller, more flexible structures instead of large scaffolding.

Restoration work on the western pediment of the Parthenon has been completed, the Culture Ministry announced on Thursday, after the last pieces of scaffolding were removed from the external facade.

The development marks a major milestone in the decades-long effort to preserve and restore the 5th-century BC temple on the Acropolis.

The scaffolding had been removed temporarily in 2025, allowing visitors unobstructed views of the western facade, but officials had said at the time that conservation work was continuing and further interventions could follow.

The ministry said the latest work included the placement of two upright stone elements in empty positions on the western pediment and the completion of restoration on a supporting wall structure. Together, the interventions restore the architectural unity of the pediment, it said.

Officials said the western facade is now being presented in its most complete possible form for the first time in about 220 years.

The Parthenon, Greece’s most recognizable landmark and part of the UNESCO-listed Acropolis, has undergone extensive restoration for decades to address structural damage, pollution and the effects of earlier interventions.

Future work on the monument is expected to use smaller, more flexible structures rather than scaffolding that obscures entire sides of the ancient temple.
