Een gespecialiseerde firma onderzoekt vrijdag of er nog oorlogsmunitie onder de grond zit in de Gasthuisstraat in Geel. Eerder deze week werd bij rioleringswerken een obus uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog gevonden, en de stad wil geen risico's nemen.

We weten dat er hier tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog wel wat machtsontplooiing was

"De werken naderen het Sint-Dimpnaplein, en we weten uit de geschiedenisboeken dat daar tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog wel wat machtsontplooiing was. De soldaten zijn destijds Geel binnengetrokken via de De Billemontstraat en de Nieuwstraat."

Het is absoluut niet zeker dat er nog iets gevonden zal worden, benadrukt de burgemeester. "De mensen moeten ook niet ongerust zijn, dit is enkel een voorzorgsmaatregel."
