The eThekwini Municipality has announced the recommissioning of the oThongathi Crematorium as part of efforts to restore essential public services and address ageing infrastructure challenges.

The facility had experienced prolonged service disruptions due to broken and malfunctioning furnaces, which caused significant inconvenience to affected communities.

More than R6 million was invested to replace the faulty furnace infrastructure. The installation, testing and commissioning of new equipment has now restored full cremation services at the facility.

Mayor Cyril Xaba said the reopening represents more than the return of a municipal service, but also the restoration of dignity for communities.

“The recommissioning of the oThongathi Crematorium not only restores a vital Municipal service but also restores dignity and respect to the cultural and religious traditions that are deeply valued by our communities,” Xaba said.

The restored facility will provide residents with improved access to cremation services closer to home, reducing the need to travel long distances during periods of bereavement.

The municipality said the project forms part of a broader programme to rehabilitate crematoria infrastructure, eliminate service backlogs and strengthen the delivery of essential municipal services across eThekwini.
