Ecuador loses to Ivory Coast

Costa Rica defeated Ecuador 1-0 in their opening match of Group E at the World Cup, with a goal from Amad Diallo in the 90th minute. Ecuador had several chances to score but failed to convert, including two shots by Enner Valencia that hit the post and another by Gonzalo Plata saved by Costa Rica's goalkeeper Yahia Fofana. Germany leads Group E with three points, followed by Costa Rica with the same number of points but a lower goal difference. Ecuador and Curacao remain without points after this match. Diallo redeems the Ivory Coast against Ecuador

This is the first time that the European Union has been involved in a joint operation with the United States in this area.

Ivory Coast won the opening match of the World Cup against Ecuador thanks to a late goal.

By Jonas Schloss

In the 1-0 (0:0) success in Philadelphia, the substituted Amad Diallo of Manchester United scored the goal of the day just before the end of the regular season. Ecuador had previously acted for a long time on eye level and especially in the first half the better chances.

Diallo: "You are here to make history"

"We needed this victory", said match winner Diallo, "but it's not over yet. We have two more games to play and we have to approach them with the same attitude and try to win them too. We came here to make history".

The Ivory Coast is the next opponent of Germany in the group stage, which had mastered its opening attack against Curacao with 7:1. That with the Ivorians on Saturday (at 22:00 CET in the audio stream) another quality belongs to the DFB team, but their intensively conducted duel against the equally physically strong Ecuadorians clearly showed.

Ivory Coast also plays against the spectators

The South Americans in particular started with a lot of momentum and sprayed offensive danger for the first time after three minutes by Moises Caicedo's long-range shot. Already at this point it was clear that Ecuador at least had the spectator advantage on its side, since the Ivory Coast had to do without the support of numerous fans due to the strict visa regulations in the USA. This also quickly became noticeable: whenever the Ivorian team was in possession of the ball, loud whistles could be heard from the ranks.

In the second half of the match, the goal was scored by a midfielder from Valencia, who had a chance to take the lead early, but the goal was not counted as the ball had already been in the back of the net.

The Ivory Coast, which started as expected with Yan Diomande (RB Leipzig), Bazoumana Touré (TSG Hoffenheim) and Elye Wahi (return to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan), came better into the game with increasing playing time. And the Bundesliga trio was then also directly in focus: First Touré shot after a great play in the left penalty area just past the right post (17).

Ecuador in the double-pitch

Even if a goal was missed so far - it was a respectable game, which was also due to the fact that both teams went to work with the necessary hardness of the duel and sought the conclusions without great detours.

On the other hand, Diomande, thanks to his speed advantages on the right wing, repeatedly launched good attacks. Because his teammates could not use the inputs, and the excited Wilfried Singo with his fall-back clearly missed (45. + 2), it remained at the goalless draw to the break.

Ivory Coast also fails at the bar

Ecuador needed only a few seconds after the change of sides to send a new round through the stadium: after a great combination with Gonzalo Plata, Valencia hit the outside post from a very sharp angle in the left penalty area.

A look at the statistics at that time also showed how competitive the game was. While Ecuador had a little more ball possession, the Ivory Coast was just ahead in the goal shots. The two-game ratio was completely balanced. Only the goals were still missing, with Diomande having the next good shot after 58 minutes, but after his successful dribbling against three Ecuadorians, he was backed up and significantly overturned the finish.

Thanks to Diallo , Ivory Coast is late .

Ecuador took a little creative break in the offensive at this stage of the game, had a really good chance in the 68th minute through Plata, but then again: Yahia Fofana was able to defuse the tight, but a little too out of place shot. The force-consuming exchange of blows left traces so slowly but surely. Both teams did not go in the final phase the very high pace.

Singo had plenty of room on the right side and was able to run unhindered towards the sixteenth. His input was then used by the replaced Diallo in the long corner by direct take-off.
