Tot de betoging, die de leuze 'Welfare not warfare' draagt, werd opgeroepen door tientallen Belgische en Europese middenveldorganisaties. "Wij verzetten ons tegen de onverantwoordelijke militarisering van onze samenleving, en tegen de plannen van de Europese Unie om 800 miljard euro extra uit te geven aan wapens", klinkt het bij hen.
"Dat geld wordt weggehaald van sociale voorzieningen, gezondheidszorg, onderwijs, arbeid, vredesopbouw, internationale samenwerking, duurzame energietransitie en klimaatrechtvaardigheid. Deze Europese trend zien we ook in België, waar massale sociale besparingen worden verkocht als noodzakelijk, maar bijkomende militaire uitgaven zonder debat passeren."
Volgens de organisatoren telt de betoging 12.000 deelnemers.
Volgens de betogers zijn de defensie-uitgaven in België tussen 2024 en 2025 met 59 procent gestegen.
"Duurzame ontwikkeling is de beste garantie voor een veilige en stabiele samenleving en dus conflictpreventie, dus moeten we opkomen voor de naleving van het VN-Handvest, de verdediging van mensenrechten en arbeidsrechten, het bevorderen van sociale en klimaatrechtvaardigheid, en investeren in internationale solidariteit en samenwerking."
De betoging vertrok van aan het Noordstation en trekt over de kleine Ring en de Joseph II-straat naar het Jean Rey-plein.
