Fatal fire in Anderlechtse loading dock probably had an accidental cause

A fire broke out in a warehouse in Anderlecht on June 6, resulting in four deaths. The Brussels prosecutor's office indicated that the cause of the fire is likely accidental, based on initial investigation findings. Firefighters were unable to enter the building due to the risk of collapse and primarily fought the fire from surrounding buildings using high-reach vehicles. Two victims were found quickly, while the other two were located after several days of search efforts.

De brand in een loods in Anderlecht die op zaterdag 6 juni het leven kostte aan 4 personen, kende waarschijnlijk een accidentele oorzaak. Dat blijkt uit de eerste elementen van het onderzoek, zo meldt het Brusselse parket. "Verder onderzoek loopt nog", klinkt het.

De brand in de loods in de Jakob Smitstraat werd zaterdagochtend 6 juni omstreeks 07.00 uur opgemerkt. Bij aankomst zag de brandweer zich geconfronteerd met een uitslaande brand in een opslagplaats, gelegen in een binnenterrein met verschillende huurders.

De brandweer kon geen binnenaanval uitvoeren omdat het gevaar op een instorting te groot was, en bluste daarom voornamelijk vanop de daken van omliggende gebouwen met behulp van de hoogtewerkers. Die bluswerken namen verschillende uren in beslag en pas rond 13.30 uur konden de eerste brandweerploegen de omgeving verlaten.

Die zaterdag werd enkel melding gemaakt van een gewonde brandweerman, maar na de brand werden wel 4 personen als vermist opgegeven. De eerste 2 slachtoffers werden snel aangetroffen, maar de 2 andere slachtoffers konden pas na enkele dagen teruggevonden worden na grondige zoekacties door de hulpdiensten.
