Confrontos históricos
Na língua, na cultura e na bola, Brasil e Portugal partilham laços difíceis de separar, e, nos Mundiais, as duas seleções se encontraram duas vezes. A primeira aconteceu em 1966, na Inglaterra, precisamente no primeiro Mundial disputado por Portugal. Do outro lado estava um Brasil que chegava como bicampeão do mundo, embalado pelos títulos de 1958, com Pelé, e 1962, liderado por Garrincha. O favoritismo era brasileiro, mas o resultado entrou para a história do futebol português.
Com dois golos de Eusébio, Portugal venceu por 3-1 e ajudou a eliminar ainda na primeira fase uma seleção brasileira que viu adiado o sonho do tricampeonato. Já para o lado português foi o início de uma campanha memorável que terminaria com o terceiro lugar - até hoje a melhor classificação da história da equipa das quinas em Mundiais.

O segundo encontro demorou mais de quatro décadas a acontecer. Em 2010, na África do Sul, os parceiros de Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo de um lado e Kaká do outro, carregavam as expectativas de duas seleções que sonhavam com o título. O que se viu, no entanto, foi um dos jogos mais fracos daquele Mundial.
Com ambas seleções já qualificadas, aquela partida ficou marcada por entradas duras, chances para os suplentes de ambas equipas e poucas oportunidades claras de golo - Brasil e Portugal empataram 0-0. Posteriormente, a seleção portuguesa seria eliminada pela Espanha nos oitavos-de-final, enquanto os comandados Dunga cairiam na fase seguinte, frente aos Países Baixos.
Scolari, o brasileiro que mudou a história recente de Portugal
Se houve alguém capaz de unir as histórias recentes das duas seleções, esse alguém foi Luiz Felipe Scolari. Em 2002, o Felipão, para os brasileiros, conduziu o Brasil ao pentacampeonato mundial na Coreia do Sul e Japão, montando uma equipa que tinha Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Cafu e Roberto Carlos como principais referências. Até hoje, essa foi a última vez que a seleção brasileira levantou a taça mais cobiçada do futebol.
Pouco mais de um ano depois, Scolari escolheu um desafio diferente: comandar Portugal, onde fez parte de um dos períodos mais marcantes da história recente da seleção das quinas. Logo no primeiro grande torneio, levou Portugal à final do Euro 2004, disputado em casa. Apesar da fatídica derrota frente à Grécia, a campanha ajudou a criar uma nova mentalidade competitiva numa seleção que, historicamente, alternava gerações talentosas com resultados aquém das expectativas (havia sido eliminada ainda na fase de grupos no Mundial 2002).

Já em 2006, no Mundial da Alemanha, Scolari voltou a fazer história. Liderados por nomes como Figo, Deco, Maniche, Ricardo Carvalho e um jovem Cristiano Ronaldo, os portugueses alcançaram as meias-finais e terminaram a competição no quarto lugar, igualando uma das melhores campanhas da história do país em Mundiais.
Mas mais do que os resultados, o treinador brasileiro ajudou a consolidar Portugal como presença habitual entre as principais seleções do planeta. Não por acaso, Scolari ainda é muito querido no país e considerado uma das figuras mais importantes da transformação que levou a equipa das quinas da condição de promessa recorrente para candidata constante nos grandes torneios internacionais.
Os brasileiros que viraram portugueses
Ao longo das últimas décadas, vários jogadores nascidos no Brasil acabaram por escrever capítulos importantes com a camisola das quinas, alguns deles tornando-se autênticos símbolos da seleção portuguesa. O caso mais emblemático é o de Deco. Nascido em São Bernardo do Campo, no estado de São Paulo, o médio ofensivo chegou ao futebol português ainda jovem e transformou-se numa das principais figuras da geração que disputou o Euro 2004 e o Mundial de 2006.
Outro nome incontornável é Pepe. Natural de Maceió, o defesa-central chegou a Portugal aos 18 anos para representar o Marítimo e acabou por construir uma carreira histórica ao serviço da seleção portuguesa, tornando-se campeão europeu em 2016 e um dos jogadores mais respeitados da história recente do país.

Mais recentemente, outros brasileiros seguiram caminho semelhante. O baiano Liedson, ídolo do Sporting, chegou a disputar o Mundial 2010 formando dupla de ataque com Cristiano Ronaldo, enquanto Otávio, nascido em João Pessoa, esteve no Catar em 2022. Dyego Sousa foi outro a passar pela seleção nos últimos anos e, atualmente, é Matheus Nunes, nascido no Rio de Janeiro, em 1998, tendo vindo para Lisboa ainda adolescente, o brasileiro a atuar pelos portugueses.
