Leta 2006 je Carolina Hurricanes kot prijetno presenečenje postala prvi prvak Lige NHL v obdobju proračunske omejitve plač. Po letih gradnje so Hurikani šli v sezono kot prvi favoriti in zdaj v končnici pokazali vso moč in osvojili hokejski sveti gral.

Na šesti tekmi velikega finala je Carolina v gosteh s 3:0 premagala Vegas in s skupnim izidom 4:2 osvojila naslov prvakov Nacionalne hokejske lige za sezono 2025/26.

To je za ekipo Carolina Hurricanes drugi Stanleyjev pokal, prvega je osvojila pred natančno 20 leti v sezoni 2005/06, ko je v finalu ugnala Edmonton s 4:3 v zmagah.
V tej sezoni so za Hurikani v velikem finalu potrebovali šest tekem, v celotni končnici pa so na poti do šampionske 16. zmage doživeli vsega tri poraze. Vegas je sicer v finalu dvakrat povedel z 1:0 in 2:1 v zmagah, a nato je Carolina nanizal tri zmage za drugi naslov prvaka.
Zaklenjena vrata Caroline na odločilni tekmi
Zlati vitezi iz Vegasa so bili na nedeljski tekmi preveč gostoljubni in so ostali celo brez doseženega gola. Za vodstvo Caroline je že v 4. minuti poskrbel Taylor Hall . Sredi tekme v 33. minuti je Jackson Blake podvojil prednost gostov. Ob koncu tekme je Vegas tvegal in zaigral brez vratarja, a je 68 sekund pred koncem Danec Nikolaj Ehlers zadel za 3:0 in potrdil naslov prvaka. Vratar Brandon Bussi je ubranil vseh 22 strelov in zaklenil vrata na odločilni tekmi za prvaka.

Leta 2006 kapetan, zdaj trener prvakov
Rod Brind'Amour je po 20 letih ponovil slavnostni dvig Stanleyjevega pokala. Takrat kot kapetan, zdaj kot trener Caroline.
Pred 20 leti je Stanleyjev pokal kot kapetan dvignil Rod Brind'Amour , ki je zdaj trener Caroline in njen zaščitni znak. "Presrečen za vse, prav to je bistvo vsega," je bil vzhičen 55-letnik in poudaril: "To je bistvo hokeja, a se to ni zgodilo šele nocoj. Ti fantje so za to garali osem let."
Tokrat je čast dviga hokejskega svetega grala pripadla kapetanu in najboljšemu igralcu letošnje končnice. Nagrado Conn Smythe za najkoristnejšega igralca pomladi je namreč prejel Jordan Staal .
Staal je pri 37 letih in 277 dneh postal najstarejši dobitnik te prestižne nagrade. Zanj je bila končna zmaga v NHL druga v karieri, Stanleyjev pokal je prvič dvignil pred 17 leti, ko je igral za Pittsburgh. "Minilo je veliko let. Po prvem naslovu sem si vsako leto želel novega in to me je gnalo skozi vsa leta. Kakšen občutek, kakšen boj. Fantje so se res borili. Toliko posameznih naporov, samo da bi plošček zadržali izven naših vrat. Neverjetno doživetje. Res sem ponosen na te fante," je bil ponosen in ganjen Staal.
Staal najstarejši MVP končnice

Kot tokratni dobitnik nagrade Conn Smythe je Jordan Staal po starosti presegel vratarja Bostona Tima Thomasa (37 let, 61 dni), ki je nagrado dobil leta 2011. Poleg tega pa je Staal zdaj rekorder še po najdaljšem premoru med dvema osvojenima pokaloma - pred njim je Chris Chelios na drugo lovoriko čakal 16 let med letoma 1986 (slavil je z Montrealom) in 2002 (zmaga z Detroitom).
V celotni končnici sezone 2025/26 je Staal zbral 12 točk za osem golov in štiri podaje na 19 tekmah, sedem točk (šest golov in podaja) je dosegel v finalu. Na zadnji tekmi sezone je sicer tretjio izmed štirih bratov Staal ostal brez gola, a je pred tem dosegel vsaj en gol na prvih petih tekmah, s čimer se je v tej statistiki izenačil z Yvanom Cournoyerjem iz leta 1973, Jeanom Beliveaujem (1956), Mauricom Richardom (1951) in Cyclonom Taylorjem (1918).
Drugi naslov za Hurikane, drugi finalni poraz za Viteze
Carolina je v finalu igrala še leta 2002, ko je klonila proti Detroitu. Poraženi Vegas so v tej sezoni tretjič igrali v velikem finalu za Stanleyjev pokal, drugič po letu 2018 so izgubili, prvaki pa so bili v sezoni 2022/23.
