Stormy night in Brussels: EU divided over contact with Putin, debate lasted for hours

At the Brussels summit, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz opposed efforts by the European Union to establish communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading to divisions among European leaders. The discussion, which lasted longer than planned, highlighted disagreements over whether the EU should engage directly with Moscow or continue focusing on military support for Ukraine. Some member states supported Macron and Merz's stance, while others backed the initiative proposed by European Council President Antonio Costa.
