A Slovenian priest, writer and publicist named Branko Cestnik has identified seven major sins prevalent within the country's political and public sphere, drawing parallels with the traditional Christian concept of the Seven Deadly Sins. In an interview with journalist Jože Bartol for Radio Ognjišče, Cestnik explained how political behavior is often influenced not just by ideology and policy, but also by personal weaknesses. He argued that understanding political actions requires more than examining programs and beliefs, as individual flaws can significantly shape decisions. Cestnik highlighted pride as the greatest danger, noting that politicians often believe they alone possess the correct vision and can solve national issues without dialogue. This sense of superiority, he warned, leads to isolation and poor governance. He emphasized that this flaw is not exclusive to capitalism but also affects former communist and current leftist political elites. Greed, according to Cestnik, manifests in corruption and the belief that individuals deserve rewards due to their position. He pointed out that this mindset extends beyond economic exploitation to include the misuse of power, where some politicians feel justified in exploiting others for personal gain. Anger, he observed, is particularly evident in social media platforms such as X, where the most provocative and hurtful statements often receive the most attention. Such expressions, he noted, foster resentment, vengeance, and long-term societal conflicts. Lust, in modern terms, encompasses not only physical desires but also the exhibition of extravagance, political banquets, and wasteful spending of public funds. Cestnik described this as a form of indulgence that undermines fiscal responsibility and ethical conduct. Envy, he stated, acts as a quiet catalyst behind many political rivalries. Successful individuals, he noted, are frequently undermined even by colleagues who once supported them, suggesting a deep-seated insecurity and desire for recognition. Laziness, finally, results in a lack of work ethic and productivity. Cestnik attributed this issue to former Prime Minister Robert Golob and broader challenges faced by both public and non-governmental sectors. He argued that complacency hampers progress and weakens institutional effectiveness. As a counterbalance to these seven sins, Cestnik proposed humility as a vital virtue. He cited athletes who acknowledge their success through gratitude to coaches, teammates, families, and faith, emphasizing that true achievement involves recognizing contributions rather than claiming sole credit. He suggested that Slovenian politics could benefit greatly from adopting a similar attitude of modesty and acknowledgment. The discussion took place during an episode of the radio show S Poznavanje Več, Predsodek Manj Krščanski Koncept, where Cestnik also explored topics such as Iran, religion in sports, and other related subjects. A summary of the show was made available by the editor, Alen Salihović, through a provided link.
