The summer months in Slovenia have long been associated with the phrase "pasja vročina," or "dog days of summer." However, this connection is more symbolic than literal. The period known as "pasji dnevi" begins on July 23 and lasts until August 23, marking the middle of the calendar summer between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. While the term suggests a direct link to dogs, the actual heat wave that has been affecting the region started five days later, on July 28, and bears little resemblance to the influence of canines. Historically, these days were linked to astrology, specifically the rising of the star Sirius in the constellation Canis Major, which was referred to as the "Dog Star." Ancient Greeks and Romans observed that Sirius appeared just before sunrise during this time, leading them to believe that its light contributed to the Earth’s warmth. This belief led to the idea that the heat was not solely due to the sun but also to the power of Sirius. As a result, the period became associated with drought, crop failure, illness, and general lethargy among people. Over time, the phrase "pasja vročina" gained popularity, even though it does not accurately describe the scientific causes of summer heat. In reality, the intense heat waves that occur during this time are often the reason behind the phrase's continued use. These periods of extreme temperatures typically align with the dates of the "pasji dnevi," reinforcing the cultural association despite its lack of astronomical accuracy. The peak of the summer heat is marked by the feast day of Saint Lawrence (August 10), which traditionally signifies the height of the season. The official end of the "pasji dnevi" is celebrated on the feast day of Saint Jerome (August 24), after which the weather gradually shifts toward cooler conditions typical of late summer and early autumn. Mornings begin to feel noticeably colder, and fog becomes more common in certain regions. During the period around Saint Lawrence’s feast day, the Perseids, or "tears of Saint Lawrence," become visible in the night sky. This meteor shower is one of the most reliable and spectacular annual events, drawing stargazers and astronomers alike. Additionally, this year will see a solar eclipse on August 12, adding another layer of celestial interest to the summer months. The tradition surrounding these days reflects a blend of historical beliefs and modern-day practices. While the ancient understanding of Sirius’s influence has been largely replaced by scientific knowledge, the cultural significance of the "pasji dnevi" persists. People continue to reference the phrase in everyday conversation, linking it to the oppressive heat of midsummer. This enduring reference highlights how deeply rooted such traditions are in Slovenian culture, even as they evolve over time.
