The most popular university faculty in Croatia has been revealed following the finalization of admission rankings for nearly 30,000 graduates who completed their high school exams. According to data from the Agency for Science and Higher Education, 32,394 candidates applied through the "Postani student" system this year. These applicants include current high school graduates expressing interest in higher education programs, as well as candidates from previous years who are still eligible to compete for spots. Of the total number of applicants, 25,174 secured admission to one of the programs they had applied for. The competition remains fierce for certain studies, particularly those offered by the most sought-after faculties. Among these, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb stands out as the most popular choice among students. According to the "Postani student" system's data, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb received the highest number of applications as the top choice. Just behind it came the study of electrical engineering and information technology and computer science at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). Other highly desired programs include business economics at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb, architecture and urban planning, speech therapy, civil engineering, dental medicine, psychology, pharmacy, and kinesiology. The data confirms that health-related and STEM fields remain among the most attractive options this year. The largest rush was toward the acting program, which had 12 available spots, with over 180 candidates applying initially. Similarly, speech therapy continues to attract a large number of applicants, over 300 each year, but only 50 are admitted. This trend highlights the intense competition for limited spots in these fields. Popular studies align with the most in-demand professions in Croatia this year. In addition to the shortage of skilled trades, the most sought-after higher education professions include doctors, medical assistants, other healthcare workers, computer specialists, programmers, electrical and mechanical engineers, civil engineers, teachers of specific subjects, psychologists, and speech therapists. There is also growing demand for experts in cyber security and data analysis, areas requiring foundational knowledge in computer science, a subject that was poorly performed by many candidates this year. The popularity of these programs reflects broader trends in the job market and societal priorities. While technical and health-related careers continue to dominate, there is also a noticeable shift in interest compared to previous decades. Programs once considered less prestigious have gained traction, while others face challenges due to changing educational preferences and parental influence. The competition for admission underscores the pressure on both students and institutions as they navigate the complexities of higher education in a rapidly evolving landscape. With more than 30,000 graduates vying for fewer spots, the process remains highly competitive, especially for the most desirable programs. The results highlight the ongoing demand for specialized skills in sectors such as healthcare, technology, and engineering, reinforcing the importance of these fields in the national economy.
