In early July 1866, a powerful fleet met its defeat in a desperate battle off the coast of the island of Vis, marking a pivotal moment in the history of Dalmacia’s integration into Croatia. The conflict, part of the broader Austro-Prussian War, saw Italian forces attempt to seize control of the strategically vital island, which had been under Austrian military occupation since 1833. The outcome of this naval engagement left Dalmacia firmly within Croatian territory, a decision that would shape the region's political identity for decades to come. The period preceding the battle was one of relative peace along the Adriatic coast. Following the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Dalmacia remained largely free from warfare for two generations. Under Austrian rule, the region gradually developed culturally and economically, with increasing ties to the mainland through trade, language, and infrastructure. The Croatian language, particularly the Štokavian dialect spoken in cities such as Split, Dubrovnik, and Zadar, became more widely used among the population. However, tensions simmered beneath the surface, especially regarding territorial claims over the eastern Adriatic. Italy, having unified in 1861, began to assert its ambitions beyond its newly acquired territories. It viewed much of the eastern Adriatic coastline, particularly the islands and coastal regions, as historically belonging to itself. Despite lacking expertise in shipbuilding, Italy turned to American shipyards to construct modern ironclad warships, including the Re d'Italia and Re di Portogallo, which were among the most advanced vessels of their time. These ships symbolized the nation’s growing military ambition and technological progress. As European powers engaged in conflicts, the Italian navy launched an aggressive campaign against Austria, culminating in the 1866 Austro-Prussian War. On July 16, 1866, a fleet of twelve armored warships and seventeen unarmored vessels set sail from Ancona under the command of Admiral Carlo di Persano. Their objective was the island of Vis, a key stronghold held by Austrian forces. The Italian strategy included deception, with smaller ships flying false flags, French and British, to mislead enemy defenses before launching a coordinated assault. On July 18, at around 11 a.m., the Italian fleet opened fire on Vis. Though the island’s fortifications were well-placed and its defenders fought bravely, the Italians possessed overwhelming firepower. The number of cannons aboard their ships far exceeded those of the Austrian defenders, leading to rapid destruction of the island’s defensive positions. The battle quickly turned into a massacre for the Austrians, who were unable to match the sheer force of the Italian attack. Communication played a crucial role in the unfolding crisis. The Austrians had established a telegraph network connecting Vis to Hvar and further inland, allowing for swift coordination. When the Italians attempted to disrupt this system, they mistakenly targeted the cable linking Vis to Hvar, leaving the connection to the mainland intact. This error proved critical, as the Austrians could still send messages to Split, where the fate of the island rested in the hands of a single postal clerk, Ivan Brauner. Using a manual typewriter, Brauner began sending messages through the surviving telegraph lines. Among the coded transmissions was the name “Lissa,” the Austrian designation for Vis. As the day progressed, these messages carried the weight of survival, guiding the remaining defenders and ensuring that the island’s resistance did not fade entirely. The battle for Vis ended with the Italian victory, but the symbolic importance of the island’s retention by Austria, and later Croatia, was undeniable. The fall of Vis marked a turning point in the region’s history. With the island secured, the Austrians maintained control over parts of Dalmacia, reinforcing the area’s status as a strategic and cultural center. The battle also underscored the shifting power dynamics in the Adriatic, setting the stage for future geopolitical developments in the Balkans.
