Letters were sent to Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize USA, Costco, and Amazon, all of which are among the largest grocery store operators in the United States. The DOJ stated that the investigation focuses on “recent increases in the retail price for beef,” emphasizing that beef affordability is a key priority for the agency. The surge in beef prices has been driven by multiple factors, including prolonged droughts, high production costs, and a dramatic decline in the national cattle herd. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price of beef and veal increased by 9.4 percent over the past 12 months, with ground beef up 9 percent and uncooked beef roasts climbing nearly 13.5 percent. These figures significantly exceed the overall inflation rate of 3.4 percent. Since Trump’s return to the presidency, the cost of ground beef has risen by about 24 percent, reaching $6.89 per pound. In May, the department confirmed it was reviewing potential antitrust violations in the beef sector, following requests from the White House. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche noted that investigators had reviewed millions of documents and engaged with industry stakeholders, including ranchers and processors. This effort aligns with other measures taken by the administration, such as a new trade policy that allows the importation of 300,000 metric tons of beef from certain countries without tariffs. The policy, effective Tuesday, aims to reduce prices by introducing lean beef trimmings into the U.S. market at a 25 percent discount compared to current rates. Despite these initiatives, the policy has drawn criticism from some ranchers and lawmakers, who argue that it undermines domestic producers. A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture defended the measure, stating it would help address affordability during a period of extreme demand and historically low cattle stocks.
