Amazon has unveiled trailers for the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the science fiction series Blade Runner 2099, both presented during a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. The announcements were made alongside the launch of new content, with the Blade Runner 2099 trailer setting the stage for its debut on Prime Video on November 25, featuring eight episodes. The series stars Michelle Yeoh as the replicant Olwen, who grapples with her impending demise, and Hunter Schafer as the fugitive Cora. Directed by Ridley Scott, the show continues the story 50 years after the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049. The third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere two weeks earlier, on November 11, following the conclusion of the second season. It takes place several years after the end of the second season, during the height of the war between elves and Sauron, as Sauron begins forging the One Ring. Notably, the series will feature a new speaking role for the Balrog, played by Simon Pegg, lending his voice to the fiery demon. This addition marks a creative expansion of the Tolkien-inspired universe, further enriching the narrative depth of the show. Both trailers were released in standard definition, available on YouTube in 1080p, despite Prime Video’s capability to offer content in 4K resolution. Amazon has opted against providing a 4K option for either trailer, which raises questions about the platform's approach to visual quality for promotional material. The production of Blade Runner 2099 began in late 2022, with casting and release dates initially unspecified. Filming took place primarily in Prague, with additional scenes shot in Barcelona, according to reports from Variety. The project has been ongoing since September 2022, indicating a long-term commitment to the franchise. Meanwhile, Amazon has adjusted its strategy regarding other projects. For instance, a planned Stargate series was reportedly canceled due to a small target audience, despite being announced just months prior. However, the company has continued investment in Blade Runner 2099 and the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, with substantial funding already allocated. This contrast highlights Amazon’s selective approach to content development, prioritizing projects with broader appeal and established fan bases. In parallel, Amazon has integrated its cloud gaming service, Luna, into the Prime Video app for users in the United States and the United Kingdom. The new “Games” section allows members to access titles from Luna without downloading, using either a controller or a smartphone as a gamepad. While this integration does not introduce additional costs, since Luna is included in the Prime membership, the service remains limited to the standard version, excluding the premium subscription. Jeff Gattis, Amazon’s head of gaming, confirmed that the premium tier will eventually be accessible through Prime Video, though the standalone Luna app will remain available. Luna is currently available in Germany as a separate application, having launched in March 2023. The basic version includes around 50 games, while the paid Luna Premium subscription offers access to approximately 160 titles for €10 per month. In June, Amazon restricted external purchases, removing access to Ubisoft+ and other external titles. Despite these limitations, the integration aims to increase visibility for Luna and compete with services like Netflix, which has expanded its gaming offerings, including the recent launch of Playground, an app focused on children’s games. Amazon’s gaming division, Amazon Game Studios, develops and publishes titles such as Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite, a co-op card battle game tied to a Prime Video movie. However, major upcoming projects like the new Tomb Raider games will not be available on Luna, underscoring the company’s strategic focus on certain titles while maintaining its broader entertainment portfolio.
