A professor from Rome's Liceo Vivona has sparked controversy after sending a private message to former students following their graduation exams, prompting an investigation by regional education authorities. The case has led to a parliamentary inquiry by Italy’s Five Star Movement, which is questioning whether officials decided to send inspectors and why. The professor, Massimo Sabbatini, claims the initial intent was to impose disciplinary sanctions, though he argues there were no legal grounds for such action. The incident began in early July when Sabbatini, a teacher of Latin, Greek, and Italian literature, sent a personal message to some of his former students who had just completed their final exams. In the letter, he urged them not to forget the events in the Gaza Strip and criticized those who remained passive during what he described as an "extermination." He referenced literary works including Dante and Eugenio Montale’s La primavera hitleriana, before signing off with a light-hearted note suggesting future meetups over movies, books, or even tennis. After the message was published in the newspaper Il Tempo, with parts of the text edited to make it appear as if it were part of school activities, the regional education office launched an investigation. Students and teachers from the Liceo Vivona were interviewed, and on July 28, Sabbatini himself was summoned. A petition supporting him gained over 11,000 signatures, highlighting public concern over the situation. During a press conference organized by educational unions and student organizations, and hosted in Parliament by deputy Stefania Ascari, Sabbatini detailed the process. He explained that the message was sent on July 6, after the completion of exams and publication of results, to a few students who were asked to share it with their classmates. On July 8, the letter appeared in the newspaper, with edits intended to mislead readers into thinking it was an official school communication. Within 24 hours, Sabbatini and other staff members received a call from the regional education office. The summons did not specify the nature of the investigation, leaving everyone uncertain about its purpose. The invitation merely requested the provision of information useful for the inquiry, without clearly stating the reason for the meeting. This lack of transparency, according to Sabbatini, created an atmosphere of pressure and intimidation. The professor claims that the goal from the start was to reach a disciplinary decision against him. However, he argues that there was no legal basis for this, as he had sent a private message to individuals using his own means, outside institutional channels. Without clear justification, he says, it is difficult to understand the motives behind the actions taken. The case has already reached the Italian parliament, with Ascari leading an inquiry into the reasons behind the inspection and whether the interviews were conducted in a manner that could be considered intimidating. The debate continues, with educators and students expressing concerns over the boundaries of academic freedom and the role of authority in regulating speech within educational institutions. As the discussion unfolds, the focus remains on the legal and ethical implications of the actions taken by the education authorities.
