A newly identified species of leafless flowering plant, dubbed Thismia daemona or the "devil flower," has been discovered in Thong Pha Phum National Park in western Thailand. The plant, which lacks chlorophyll and relies on underground fungi for sustenance, grows nearly entirely hidden beneath leaf litter on the forest floor. This location represents a significant shift in the known geographic distribution of the Thismia section Geomitra, which had previously been recorded only in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. The presence of Thismia daemona extends the range of this group northward for the first time. Dr. Sahut Chantanaorrapint of Prince of Songkla University expressed surprise at the discovery, noting that the conditions in Thong Pha Phum National Park were unlike those typically associated with Thismia species. He emphasized the importance of the find, stating that it expands scientific understanding of the genus’s ecological adaptability. The plant’s striking features, including its dark coloration and distinctive shape, were cited by researchers as justification for its name, which reflects both its visual characteristics and its elusive nature. The species is currently considered critically endangered due to its extremely limited distribution. Only fewer than 50 individual plants have been observed in an area smaller than a football field.
