His body was discovered on July 6 in waters near the island’s northwestern tip. Wonsley shared an image of the threatening letter on Facebook, noting that the envelope bore a postmark from Denver, Colorado, dated July 15, 2026. In her post, she condemned the sender, stating, “Bold enough to send this crap but not bold enough to list your return address.” She emphasized the emotional toll of dealing with such behavior while seeking answers about her son’s fate. The FBI's Jackson Field Office has confirmed its involvement in the case, assisting the Jackson County Sheriff's Office with specific aspects of the investigation. Additionally, the agency is conducting a separate inquiry into interstate threats directed at individuals linked to the case. Newsweek has contacted Crump, Sharpton, and the FBI for further comments. In the early stages of the investigation, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office ruled out foul play, citing the absence of suspicious circumstances. However, the family and Crump have raised concerns about the reliability of the witnesses' accounts. Crump's legal team secured video footage showing a confrontation just before Wells disappeared. In the clip, Wells is heard saying, “Give me my freaking phone. What are you freaking doing?” According to Crump, the video casts doubt on the timeline and details provided by Wells’ friends. Tracestin Shepherd, a friend who was on Horn Island that day, disputed the interpretation of the footage. He told Rolling Stone that he, not Wells, was the one yelling in the video. Shepherd explained that the footage depicted a different altercation involving himself and another man, and that Wells was not visible in the recording. Crump highlighted that Wells was one of the few Black individuals present among approximately 200 people on the island during the holiday celebration. He stressed that the lived experiences of Black Americans necessitate questioning every detail, including the roles of witnesses and law enforcement. During a press conference in Pascagoula, Crump reiterated the importance of scrutinizing all aspects of the case. On July 10, during a news conference at the National Action Network in New York, Crump announced that Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp will fund an independent autopsy for Wells. This move underscores the ongoing efforts to seek clarity and justice for the young athlete and his family.
