In Abuja, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared itself fully prepared for a nationwide campaign aimed at reviewing the national minimum wage. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony of the Comrade Godwin Abumisi Pensioners Legacy House and Multipurpose Hall, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero emphasized that the organization is poised for a major national struggle over the issue. This declaration comes amid growing concerns over the financial insecurity faced by both current workers and retired individuals. Ajaero highlighted the need for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage, stating that discussions on worker welfare must include the well-being of retirees. He underscored that the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), a key affiliate of the NLC, is integral to the labor movement’s agenda. According to him, the welfare of pensioners is equally vital and must be addressed alongside ongoing efforts to improve conditions for active workers. The NLC leader warned that the rising cost of living, particularly in essential areas such as food, healthcare, and transportation, has made the current pension system unsustainable. He argued that many retirees are forced to live below the poverty line due to inadequate support, which he described as a historical injustice. Ajaero called for the establishment of a national minimum pension, asserting that those who dedicated their lives to public service deserve a dignified existence post-retirement. The speech also included a call for unity among pensioners across the country. Ajaero encouraged them to remain organized and prepared as the campaign gains momentum. He likened the newly constructed Legacy House to more than just a building, it should function as a hub for mobilization, strategy, and solidarity. This facility, he said, would play a crucial role in coordinating the upcoming efforts to secure better terms for both current and former workers. Ajaero reiterated that the working class understands the tactics used by those who exploit labor. He stressed the importance of maintaining unity within the labor movement to ensure that the government upholds its responsibilities to both employed and retired citizens. The completion of the Legacy House was framed as a symbolic moment, urging all participants to take action beyond mere infrastructure development. The NLC leader also mentioned the need for the immediate resolution of outstanding pension arrears and the implementation of a pension system that ensures long-term security for retirees.
