To accommodate this, the company proposes a multimedia exhibition at the Eigergletscher station, which would allow visitors to engage with the mountain’s history and geology through interactive displays. The project also includes repurposing existing buildings near the station, some dating back to the era of early railway construction. The company claims these structures could serve as venues for shops, sports equipment rentals, and overnight accommodations, all aimed at improving visitor comfort. However, critics argue that such expansions risk transforming the area into a commercial hub rather than preserving its natural character. Environmental organizations have accused the company of employing “salami tactics”, gradually increasing development while avoiding broader regulatory scrutiny, following the recent introduction of the Eiger Express gondola in 2019, which significantly boosted capacity without prior discussion of future expansion. Local authorities in both Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald have expressed reservations about the proposals. A December 2025 community meeting in Grindelwald rejected a territorial exchange agreement required for the museum’s construction, citing the need for the railway company to first address traffic congestion within the village. Residents there remain skeptical, arguing that additional tourist facilities will exacerbate existing problems. A recent survey conducted by the Jungfrau Region tourism organization found that nearly 90 percent of locals in eastern Bernese Oberland believe tourism is already placing unsustainable pressure on regional roads and services. Meanwhile, cantonal representatives, including Bernese councillor Stephanie Gartenmann (SVP), have called for a comprehensive strategy to manage transportation demands.
