The Mexico City Metro has intensified its security measures to prevent the entry, transportation, and sale of fireworks within its stations during the national celebrations of September. Starting September 1 through September 16, the Metro will conduct a special operation called "Zero Fireworks," aimed at curbing the illegal movement of pyrotechnics inside its facilities. The initiative involves increased surveillance and police presence at all station entrances during operating hours. The operation focuses particularly on seven key stations identified as high-risk areas by the Metro system. These include Candelaria, serving lines 1 and 4; Merced, on line 1; Pino Suárez, which connects lines 1 and 2; Balderas, linking lines 1 and 3; Hidalgo, covering lines 2 and 3; Indios Verdes, part of line 3; and Jamaica, connecting lines 4 and 9. At these locations, security personnel will perform more frequent checks to identify individuals attempting to carry or introduce fireworks into the premises. In addition to physical inspections, mobile security units from the Force Reaction and Strategic Groups will patrol trains, corridors, and distribution zones to detect and stop the movement or sale of fireworks. These groups will work alongside the Metro's existing security forces to ensure comprehensive coverage. The Metro has also coordinated with the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) to manage the collection and proper disposal of confiscated fireworks. The Agrupamiento Fuerza de Tarea will assist in this process, ensuring that any seized items are handled appropriately according to established protocols. To enhance monitoring efforts, the Metro’s video surveillance system will be used to track activity at entrances where there have been higher incidents of users trying to enter with fireworks. This technology will support real-time oversight and help direct resources effectively. If someone is caught transporting or selling fireworks, they will be immediately reported to the Central Monitoring Post (PCM). From there, legal authorities will be notified to determine the appropriate course of action regarding both the individual and the confiscated materials. The Coordination of Integrated Risk Management will take charge of removing the decommissioned fireworks from the stations and handing them over to the SSC for safe handling. The Metro emphasized that the use and transportation of fireworks within its infrastructure pose serious risks to passengers. These dangers include severe injuries, fires, damage to structures, and service disruptions. As such, the Metro continues to stress the importance of maintaining safety standards during public holidays when the risk of such incidents increases significantly. The heightened security measures reflect ongoing concerns about public safety during major holiday periods. Authorities have noted previous instances where fireworks have caused harm or disruption, prompting stricter enforcement of rules against their unauthorized use within Metro stations. With this new initiative, officials aim to reduce the likelihood of such incidents occurring during the upcoming festivities. The Metro’s operations team has reiterated that compliance with these regulations is essential to protect both the infrastructure and the well-being of commuters. By focusing on prevention and swift response, the Metro hopes to create a safer environment for all users during the busy month of September.
