Financiación
El Universal se financia comercialmente a través de publicidad impresa y digital, ventas de copias y suscripciones en línea. Al igual que con la mayoría de los grandes diarios mexicanos, la publicidad (oficial) del gobierno ha sido históricamente una fuente de ingresos, pero opera como una empresa privada con fines de lucro en lugar de un presupuesto estatal.
Afiliación y postura
El Universal es propiedad privada de una sola familia sin control de partido o estado, lo que lo hace INDEPENDENTE, con una amplia cobertura CENTRAL (establishment). Su principal riesgo de dependencia es el patrón general mexicano de publicidad discrecional del gobierno que influye en los puntos de venta, pero la propiedad y el control editorial recaen en la familia Ealy Ortiz en lugar de un partido o el estado.
