A nationwide ban on open fires in nature has been in effect in Slovenia for nearly a month, significantly altering how residents can enjoy outdoor activities such as picnics. The restriction applies particularly to areas under high fire risk, with eight municipalities on the Kras peninsula and in Northern Primorska designated as being under extreme danger. This means that all forms of open flames, such as campfires, charcoal grills, and even smoking, are strictly prohibited in these regions. General Director of the Fire Service and Rescue Agency, Leon Behin, warned during the announcement that even a single spark could ignite a fire, emphasizing the need for caution. As a result, many are turning to commercial picnic spaces that comply with safety regulations instead of traditional outdoor settings. The restrictions extend beyond just fires. Parking on dry grass or vegetation is also discouraged, as vehicles can potentially start a fire through heat buildup or mechanical failure. Authorities recommend that cars should only be parked on asphalted or designated surfaces. For those who prefer to have a picnic in their backyard, this activity is still permitted since it does not fall under the definition of “natural environment” according to legislation. However, it is advised to use gas grills without sparks or ensure that any flame is constantly monitored by an adult. In addition to the fire prevention measures, another notable development in transportation infrastructure has emerged in India. A stretch of road in the state of Madhya Pradesh has been transformed into what appears to be a large red-and-black checkerboard pattern. This is not an artistic installation but rather an innovative attempt to reduce vehicle speeds and protect wildlife. The project involves applying a five-millimeter thick red thermoplastic material over two kilometers of the national highway NH-45, which connects Bhopal and Jabalpur. The distinctive color alerts drivers they are entering a sensitive area, while the slightly raised surface creates vibrations and sounds that encourage them to slow down. This initiative was introduced at the end of 2025 and has recently drawn attention due to its potential effectiveness. If proven successful, similar red markings could become standard on Indian roads passing through forested and ecologically sensitive areas. Unlike traditional speed-reducing measures, this method requires minimal changes to existing roadways, causes less noise pollution, and is easier to maintain or remove if necessary. The focus of the project extends beyond merely slowing traffic. It encompasses almost 12 kilometers of road within the tiger reserve, including the construction of 25 underpasses for wild animals. Fencing along the roadside aims to prevent animals from crossing onto the road, while guiding them toward safe crossings. Cameras installed on bridges and crossings monitor animal movement, and additional lighting uses solar energy to minimize environmental impact. India faces a pressing need for such solutions, given the increasing number of wildlife fatalities on roads. According to data from the Economic Times, 582 animals died on state highways through forested areas in 2024 alone, compared to 508 in 2023. The problem becomes more severe as older two-lane roads are expanded to four lanes, increasing both speed and traffic density without modifying the natural pathways of wildlife. Authorities claim there have been no recorded fatal accidents on the test section in the first six months, though long-term monitoring will be needed to fully assess the project's effectiveness. Plans are already underway to implement similar projects on other forest roads. If the red road proves effective in reducing vehicle speeds and collisions with wildlife, this unusual sight could soon become commonplace across numerous Indian highways.
