The European Parliament member Ilaria Salis has been condemned by the Milan Tribunal for unjustly dismissing two of her collaborators, resulting in a total compensation of €300,900. According to Adnkronos, the court ruled that the dismissals lacked proper justification, leading to a financial settlement for the former employees who had assisted her during her election campaign. The tribunal’s decision followed the failure of the plaintiffs to notify the case at Salis's official residence address, contributing to her absence throughout the proceedings. The judgment, issued by Judge Franco Caroleo from the Labor Section of the Milan Tribunal, fully accepted the claims of the two former workers, represented by lawyers Francesca Verdura, Tiziana Laratta, and Sergio Romanotto. The ruling ordered a compensation of €300,900, which includes the unpaid salaries the employees would have received until the end of their contracts, which were set to expire on July 16, 2029. Additionally, the court awarded €10,000 for legal expenses. The two workers were initially hired with monthly salaries of €2,900 and €3,000 respectively, tasked with developing projects to enhance Salis's parliamentary activities, organizing campaigns and events both domestically and internationally, managing relations with authorities, and providing political strategic advice. Salis, arrested in Hungary on charges of assaulting far-right militants during the so-called "Day of Honor" demonstrations, was elected to the European Parliament in June 2024 under the Green and Left alliance. Her election campaign was supported by these two collaborators, who were subsequently dismissed in February 2025. One of them was informed of the termination due to a "loss of trust relationship," citing a situation of "environmental and personal incompatibility." The other was immediately removed from his position due to "clear dissatisfaction" regarding the quality of collaboration. In response to the verdict, Salis described the incident as "surreal" and claimed she was unable to defend herself adequately. She expressed confidence in the potential appeal, stating that her decisions were neither arbitrary nor devoid of motivation. In a detailed statement on social media, she highlighted that the initial ruling in March 2026 had deemed the dismissal lacking in just cause, and she had already challenged this decision, with the appeal process ongoing. The court emphasized that the employer bears the burden of proving the existence of a valid reason for dismissal. Since Salis remained absent throughout the proceedings and did not provide supporting evidence, the judge concluded that the dismissals lacked legitimate grounds. This led to the recognition of the right of the former employees to receive compensation.
