Austria's second-largest women's concentration camp to be demolished, become a Lidl supermarket

Austria's second-largest women's concentration camp, the Hirtenberg subcamp of the Mauthausen system, is set to be demolished and replaced with a Lidl supermarket and refrigerated logistics facility. Established during World War II, the camp held approximately 400 women, mostly Jews from Auschwitz, with many Russians being the largest group. The site was sold by local mayor and real estate developer Andreas Ramharter to businessman Thomas Rattensperger for over €15 million, with additional profits from rezoning. Despite protests from Holocaust memorials and Jewish communities, the Federal Monuments Office ruled the site did not meet criteria for protected monument status, allowing construction to proceed.
