The Municipality of Kranj has once again begun its search for a new director of the Kranj City Library, following the recent decision by the library's governing body to open a fresh tender process. The call for applications was published on August 21, 2026, with submissions due by midnight on September 4. The position will remain vacant until December 1, when the new director is expected to take office, according to the official announcement. Aleš Sladojevič, former director of the Kranj City Administration, is currently acting as interim director since July 1. He was appointed to this role by the library’s board after the city council refused to approve his nomination for a full-time directorship earlier this year. Sladojevič did not receive support from either the professional staff or the advisory committee of the library, which had previously opposed his candidacy. His appointment as acting director came amid controversy, as the city council expressed confusion over how someone who failed to secure a full mandate could assume such a prominent role. The Kranj City Council had raised concerns about the decision made by the library’s board to appoint Sladojevič as acting director. They viewed this move as contradictory to their previous stance and questioned whether someone without formal approval could hold such responsibility. In response, the head of the library’s board, Igor Velov, explained that there were no other candidates available at the time. The previous director, Manja Vunšek, had been serving as acting director until June 30 before moving on to a new job. According to Velov, the board had limited options because none of the current employees met the required qualifications outlined in the tender. This led them to choose Sladojevič, despite his lack of prior approval from the city council. Velov stated that the board intended to launch a new tender process in September, after the summer break ended. However, they moved ahead with the process earlier than planned, announcing the new call for applications in August. The deadline for submitting applications is set for September 4, allowing potential candidates ample time to prepare their bids. The new director will serve a five-year term starting on December 1, with the possibility of reappointment after the term ends, as specified in the official tender document.
