A leave to accompany a first-year pupil must be applied for in good time

Employees who are parents of new first-graders will once again have access to an additional paid day off to accompany their child to school on the first day of classes this September. The right to this special leave is part of the Labour Relations Act from 2020, which grants both parents the opportunity to take time off for such occasions. The law states that employees can claim up to seven days of paid absence per calendar year due to personal circumstances. These include situations such as the death of a spouse or partner, the death of a child, foster child, child of a spouse or partner, parent, grandparent, or guardian, serious accidents, and accompanying a student entering first grade for the first time. This type of leave is considered extraordinary and must be requested by the employee with proof that their child is starting first grade. According to the Free Trade Unions of Slovenia, it is advisable for employees to inform their employer in writing and in advance about the intended use of this leave so that the employer is aware and prepared. The extraordinary leave can only be used on the actual first day of school, no earlier and no later. This ensures that the leave is specifically reserved for this occasion and not misused for other purposes. In some cases, the minimum one-day absence allowed by law can be extended beyond a single day based on certain industry-specific or company collective agreements. Employers may grant additional days if the employee requests them and provides documentation confirming that their child is beginning first grade. Parents should be aware that they need to request this leave well in advance and provide necessary documentation to their employers. Failure to do so could result in the leave being denied or delayed, potentially affecting the ability to attend the first day of school with their child. Employers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Labour Relations Act to ensure compliance and support for their employees' needs during this significant transition period for families. Employees are advised to check their specific employment contracts or consult with their union representatives to understand the exact terms and conditions applicable to their situation.
