Night cycle route returns to Bogotá on August 27: timetable, disabled routes and recommendations

Bogotá will host its return of the Night Cycling Route on August 27 under the theme "Walk Under the Stars," marking a key event within the 29th edition of the Summer Festival. The event had originally been scheduled for last week but was postponed due to a recent earthquake affecting the country. The city’s recreation and sports authority confirmed that 94.01 kilometers of road will be closed to vehicle traffic, allowing residents to walk, run, skate, or bike freely along designated routes. The initiative, organized by the District Institute of Recreation and Sports (IDRD), aims to bring together families and encourage physical activity while promoting a different perspective of the city. Daniel García Cañón, director of the IDRD, emphasized the significance of the event, stating that it offers an opportunity for the community to come together and experience Bogotá in a unique way. The Night Cycling Route will take place from 6:00 p.m. until 11:59 p.m., during which time several major thoroughfares will have restricted vehicle access. These include Carrera Séptima, stretching from the historic center to the northern part of the city; Avenida Boyacá, connecting south to north; Calle 116, spanning across the northern area; and Avenida Calle 26 (also known as Avenida Dorado), linking east to west. In collaboration with the District Secretary of Culture, Recreation, and Sports, this edition of the event will incorporate initiatives such as Bogotá Cultura 24/7 and the Creative Districts program. A special route called the Creative Districts Bike Ride will be held along Carrera Séptima, starting at Plaza de Bolívar and ending at Calle 60 (Parque de los Hippies). Key locations during the event will feature interactive stations and artistic interventions at Parque Santander, cultural performances and activations at Plazoleta Bulevar de San Diego, and the presence of the mobile CEFE Móvil unit, screen printing station, and performance art at Parque de los Hippies. Participants are advised to conduct a mechanical check of their bicycles before heading out, ensuring brakes, tires, and chains are in proper working condition. Protective gear and visibility aids are mandatory, including helmets, red and white lights, and reflective vests or clothing. Attendees should follow instructions given by the cycling route guardians and traffic agents present on the roads. The event aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility and public engagement in recreational activities. It also highlights the city's commitment to creating safe spaces for non-motorized transport and fostering community interaction through cultural and sporting events. The Night Cycling Route has become a regular fixture in Bogotá's calendar, drawing thousands of participants each year.
