2 dead, 5 injured as Ganesh idol falls during arrival ceremony in Mumbai

A tragic accident occurred in south Mumbai on Saturday night when a 22-foot-tall Ganesh idol collapsed during an arrival ceremony, resulting in two deaths and five injuries. The incident took place around 10 p.m. on Balaram Merchant Road near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk in Bhuleshwar, where devotees had gathered for the arrival of Bhuleshwaracha Raja. The idol, part of the annual Ganeshotsav celebrations, fell onto a densely packed crowd, causing severe casualties. The idol, known as Bhuleshwar Cha Raja, was being transported from Lalbaug to Bhuleshwar as part of the traditional procession. According to police reports, the structure carrying the idol toppled during the ceremony, striking several individuals in the crowded area. Emergency services, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, traffic police, civic ward personnel, and the 108 ambulance service, were quickly dispatched to the scene. Rescue and relief operations were carried out promptly, with the injured taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two of the injured succumbed to their injuries. They were identified as 33-year-old Sanket Nevshe and 30-year-old Brijesh Hemant Joshi. Nevshe was noted as the president of the Ganpati mandal, highlighting his prominent role in organizing the event. The other fatalities were confirmed through medical examination. Among the five injured, four adults and two children were affected. The victims included 38-year-old Vaibhav Ghenand, 25-year-old Pawan Chaurasiya, 26-year-old Kunal Kashid, and two children, five-year-old Lavanya Ganer and seven-year-old Divya Ganer. All five injured were reported to be in stable condition at the time of reporting. Police investigations suggest that the idol’s frame may have been improperly welded, leading to structural instability. A fire brigade official stated that the idol slipped out of the frame from the center, causing it to fall. The incident occurred just as the procession was nearing the destination pandal. Witnesses reported that many of the injured were seated on a trolley carrying the idol at the time of the collapse. The idol broke into three pieces before being placed on a dumper for transportation to the immersion site. The mandal responsible for the event, which is celebrating its 63rd Utsav this year, had commissioned the idol to sculptor Aniket Desai. The idol was originally intended for immersion at the end of the festival, a common practice during Ganeshotsav. The festival, which spans ten days, involves the installation and worship of idols of Lord Ganapati at homes and public pandals. Devotees often participate in large processions to transport these idols to their respective locations, accompanied by music, decorations, and enthusiastic crowds. This incident has sparked discussions about the safety measures required during such large-scale religious events.
