A luxury resort on Spain’s Costa Cálida became the scene of a chaotic incident as a boat carrying approximately 60 migrants approached the shore near the beach of Cala del Barco, close to the renowned La Manga Club. The vessel arrived early on Thursday, drawing the attention of tourists who were sunbathing nearby. According to video footage shared on social media, the migrants jumped into the sea and swam toward the beach while spectators watched in shock. Some tourists collected their belongings and moved away from the water, with one woman shouting, “Pick up your things. Call the police.” The boat had reached the small cove of Cala del Barco, which is located near La Manga, before turning back toward open waters after the migrants disembarked. Local authorities responded to calls from both tourists and residents on the beach, but they arrived at the scene only after the migrants had already left. The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of maritime border controls in the region. Francisco Bernabé, a former mayor of La Unión, expressed frustration over the situation, questioning how a vessel of such size could have gone undetected by coastal radar systems. He asked whether the equipment was faulty, turned off, or simply ignored. His comments reflect growing unease among local officials regarding the security of Spain’s coastline against unauthorized crossings. Noelia Arroyo, the mayor of Cartagena, which includes Cala del Barco within its jurisdiction, warned that such incidents must not become normalized. She criticized the ease with which human trafficking networks can reach Spanish shores and called for a reassessment of how maritime borders are monitored. Her remarks highlight the tension between managing migration flows and maintaining public safety along the coast. The incident occurred shortly after the Spanish government introduced new policies affecting children among the migrant population. On July 30, the government announced that minors who had entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta would be returned to Morocco. However, it soon emerged that the leftist coalition government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez would allow the relocation of 500 underage migrants to the mainland. This policy shift came amid a surge in migration attempts, with nearly 72,500 migrants arriving in Ceuta last month, though most were later repatriated to Morocco. Many of those remaining established makeshift camps on beaches, prompting large-scale clean-up operations by local police. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska had previously stated that individuals entering the Spanish enclave on the northern coast of Africa would be sent back to Morocco. However, the recent decision to relocate some minors has sparked debate over the interpretation of these policies. While many migrants have been returned, thousands remain stranded, creating ongoing challenges for local authorities. Despite the chaos witnessed at Cala del Barco, official figures on the number of migrants who successfully crossed into Spain following this incident have yet to be released.
