Record temperatures were recorded in Koper and Jezersko on Sunday, marking a new high for both locations. In Markovc, Koper, the thermometer climbed to 40.1 degrees Celsius, while in Jezersko, it reached 34.3 degrees. These readings broke previous records set in 2017 and 2013 respectively. The heatwave continues to spread eastward across Slovenia, with forecasters predicting temperatures potentially reaching or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas over the coming days. The extreme weather conditions began early Sunday morning on the coast, where a night-time storm had already caused disruptions. Despite this, temperatures soared quickly, with the peak reading in Markovc occurring between 12 and 13 o'clock local time. A spokesperson from the Slovenian Environment Agency (Arso) noted that the heatwave was moving eastward, suggesting further record-breaking temperatures could occur in central and eastern parts of the country. The meteorological office has issued red alerts for much of the country starting Tuesday, with the exception of the northwest region. For Monday, temperatures are expected to range between 33 and 39 degrees Celsius, with the highest heat stress anticipated in coastal areas and central regions. Orange warnings have been issued for the rest of the country due to high temperatures. From Tuesday through Thursday, red alerts will cover the entire nation except for the northwestern part. By Friday, there is a higher chance of rainfall in the form of thunderstorms, though this probability is expected to decrease again by next week. High temperatures and low water levels have significantly impacted fish populations in rivers and lakes across Slovenia. The Slovenian Fisheries Institute has implemented temporary fishing bans in several areas due to the adverse conditions. Fish are struggling with elevated water temperatures, reduced oxygen levels, and low flow rates, which threaten their survival. According to Matevž Podjed, acting director of the Slovenian Fisheries Institute, the situation is critical in certain rivers where water temperatures have reached lethal levels for fish. He emphasized that fishing adds additional stress to already vulnerable fish populations and urged anglers to avoid these areas until conditions improve. Temporary bans have been introduced on Lake Cerknica and the Sava Bohinjka river, with the list of affected areas expanding rapidly to include the Savinja River among others. The Fishing Association of Slovenia has called on its members to consider voluntarily suspending sport fishing activities in their local waters until the weather stabilizes. They have also advised individual anglers to refrain from fishing in areas where fish life is at risk. This widespread measure marks one of the largest such actions in recent years, highlighting the severity of the current environmental challenges faced by aquatic ecosystems in Slovenia.
