Once again, we've detected an increase in floating bushes.

V Bohinjskem jezeru so zaradi visokih temperatur in sušnih razmer ponovno nastale plavajoče gošče.

In recent days, increased floating algae have been observed in parts of Lake Bled, prompting local authorities to issue warnings while reassuring the public that swimming remains safe under certain conditions. The phenomenon has been noted primarily near the Naklovo Glava bay, approximately ten meters from the shore. Although the algae have appeared in smaller quantities compared to last year, their presence has raised concerns among environmental experts and local officials. The situation developed following several weeks of high temperatures and dry weather conditions, which have created ideal conditions for algal blooms. Local authorities have advised caution, particularly with regard to children and pets, who might accidentally ingest the algae-laden water. Despite this, they emphasized that the overall water quality in Lake Bled remains clean and suitable for swimming. National Institute of Biology confirmed the presence of potentially toxic cyanobacteria in collected samples, though the levels of toxins released into the surrounding water remain low. Environmental specialists explained that these cyanobacteria typically grow on rocks or other surfaces within the water and eventually detach, forming visible mats on the surface. Analysis of the samples also revealed the presence of genes responsible for producing anatoxins, substances linked to past incidents involving dogs on the lake’s shores. These findings were consistent with similar occurrences last year, when multiple canine cases were reported due to exposure to contaminated water. Local mayor Jože Sodja highlighted that the Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for the Environment (Arso) regularly monitors water quality in accordance with legal requirements. According to his statement, the microbiological quality of bathing waters in Lake Bled continues to meet standards, ensuring that swimming remains generally safe. He added that the municipality has communicated the presence of the algae to the public and urged individuals to avoid areas where the algae are present, especially advising against allowing dogs to swim there, as they are more vulnerable than humans. Sodja also mentioned that ongoing efforts are being made to maintain the lake's condition, noting that rising temperatures and changing environmental factors have led to alterations in the shoreline. He assured the community that all necessary measures will be taken to preserve the lake’s health, emphasizing that the current water quality remains unaffected by the algae bloom. As part of the Ciano SLO project, scientists further elaborated on the nature of the algae bloom, confirming that the organisms responsible are commonly found in freshwater environments and can occasionally pose risks to both animals and humans. They stressed that while the immediate danger to swimmers is low, vigilance is required, especially when dealing with young children and pets. The project team is continuing its research and monitoring activities to better understand the long-term implications of such phenomena on the region's ecosystems.
