Ukraine's deadly strikes on Russia open 'Pandora's Box', Putin says

Ukrainian drone attacks across Russia and occupied territories have resulted in at least 10 deaths, according to Russian officials, with President Vladimir Putin warning that the strikes could lead to further escalation. The attacks targeted multiple locations, including industrial sites and a warehouse belonging to the Russian online retailer Ozon. Putin described the strikes as opening a “Pandora’s box” of potential Russian retaliation. The attacks occurred across several regions of Russia, with varying degrees of casualties. In the Samara region, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev reported that an elderly woman died in a strike on the city of Novokuibyshevsk, which also damaged industrial facilities. Ukraine’s military claimed responsibility for hitting the city’s oil refinery, resulting in a fire. Meanwhile, in the Krasnodar region, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev stated that three individuals, two of whom were children, were killed and another adult injured during an attack on the Sea of Azov port town of Yeysk. A fire broke out at an unspecified facility within the town’s port area. In the Belgorod region, which shares a border with Ukraine, the governor reported two fatalities and 13 injuries due to Ukrainian attacks. In the neighboring Bryansk region, four people sustained wounds from similar incidents. On the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014, the Moscow-backed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, noted that at least two people were killed and 10 injured when a Ukrainian drone struck a city bus. In the Luhansk region, an eastern Ukrainian province largely under Russian control, the Moscow-installed governor, Leonid Pasechnik, reported that two civilians, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed and nine others wounded. The attacks come amid heightened tensions following a previous incident in which Russian drones struck a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, killing 16 people and injuring 30. Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed that the death toll had reached 16, with nine people still missing and another 130 wounded. This attack highlighted the growing threat posed by Russian aerial assaults, especially given Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems, which are essential for countering such threats. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed this issue directly, discussing the shortage of air defenses with French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron pledged to expedite the delivery of new French equipment, including interceptor missiles, aligning with earlier commitments made during the launch of the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition. In a statement on X, Macron expressed his horror and deep emotion regarding the Russian drone strike in Kryvyi Rih, criticizing Russia’s strategy of targeting civilians as both intimidating and indicative of weakness. Ukraine is currently waiting for the arrival of the Italo-French SAMP/T-NG missile defense system, which experts believe will be effective against ballistic missiles. However, European diplomats have indicated that this system is unlikely to reach Ukraine before spring of next year. In addition to these developments, Zelenskyy reported that one person was killed and another injured in recent attacks involving missiles striking railway infrastructure in Kyiv. Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that their forces had targeted a locomotive depot. Separately, local authorities reported that two people were killed in a Russian ballistic missile strike later on Saturday afternoon. These ongoing conflicts underscore the escalating nature of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with each side continuing to employ increasingly sophisticated tactics in their efforts to gain strategic advantage.
