CroatiaAn environmental assessment conducted by the Croatian Defense Council (VJ) in collaboration with the Faculty of Geotechnics has revealed severe contamination at the former Varazdin furniture factory site, Florijan Bobić, now known as Mundus. The report indicates that approximately 1,352 tons of mixed waste have been illegally dumped on the site, with some samples exceeding even the criteria for hazardous waste landfills. Heavy metals, microplastics, bacteria, and other microorganisms were found in the waste. Two distinct locations of illegal dumping were identified: a large northern area covering around 1,703 square meters with waste reaching depths of 3.6 meters, and a smaller southern location with at least 30 tons of unknown origin sludge buried between 30 and 80 centimeters deep. Analysis showed elevated concentrations of metals such as copper, zinc, lead, nickel, chromium, and antimony, with some samples surpassing even hazardous waste standards. Organic carbon levels were also significantly higher than allowed.
