SPAK arrests suspected leader of international drug trafficking ring

The Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) in Albania has arrested Emiljan Burba, who is suspected of being a leader of a criminal organization involved in international drug trafficking. The investigation, which was conducted in close cooperation with European judicial authorities, the Criminal Police Department, International Criminal Units, and supported by Eurojust and Europol, uncovered three cases of cross-border drug trafficking. These included the seizure of 1,722 kilograms of marijuana by Macedonian authorities in November 2020, 236 kilograms of marijuana by Turkish authorities in January 2021, and 475 kilograms of cocaine intercepted by Dutch authorities in October 2020. The investigation identified 14 individuals under suspicion, including those already processed in related cases. As part of the ongoing investigation, the court ordered the arrest of E.B., another alleged leader of the organized crime group, for his involvement in the second case involving drug trafficking to Turkey.
