South African architects gain pathway to work in the US under landmark agreement

A landmark Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) in the United States and the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) was implemented on July 6, 2026. The agreement enables South African architects to pursue professional registration in the U.S., while allowing American architects to work in South Africa. This makes South Africa one of only a few countries with which NCARB has established such a reciprocal licensing agreement. The MRA focuses on recognizing equivalent professional competencies rather than just academic qualifications, accommodating diverse educational backgrounds. Both organizations emphasized that the agreement aims to remove regulatory barriers while maintaining high professional standards and promoting international collaboration.

Bias read (Center): The article presents the agreement as a mutually beneficial development that enhances professional mobility and international collaboration. While the agreement involves governmental regulatory bodies, the tone remains neutral, focusing on technical aspects of the agreement rather than taking a pole
