A swarm of jellyfish has paralyzed part of Western Europe's largest nuclear plant: three reactors shut down

Three reactors at France’s largest nuclear power plant, Gravelines, were shut down on Monday, while the output of a fourth was halved, leaving just one reactor operating at full capacity. The sixth reactor had already been taken offline due to planned maintenance, according to reports from Euronews. This marks another disruption in the country's nuclear energy production, which has faced challenges this year due to heatwaves and droughts. The shutdown came after a surge in jellyfish populations blocked the intake systems of the plant’s cooling infrastructure. The situation led to a temporary halt in operations at the facility located near Dunkerque on France’s northern coast. The plant, which houses six reactors each with a capacity of 900 megawatts, is the largest nuclear power station in Western Europe. EDF, the operator of the Gravelines plant, stated in a statement that the current situation does not affect the safety of the site, its workers, or the surrounding environment. However, the impact on energy production has been noticeable. According to calculations by AFP based on data from EDF, nuclear output in France was 15.6 percent lower than average during the week prior to the shutdown. This is not the first time the plant has encountered issues related to marine life. A similar problem occurred last year when jellyfish temporarily halted operations following a blockage in the seawater intake pumps. In 2023, the same issue forced a brief shutdown, highlighting a recurring challenge for the facility. Jellyfish blooms have become a growing concern for nuclear facilities worldwide. In Sweden, a similar issue caused one nuclear plant to close for three days in 2013, while in Japan, a comparable incident in 1999 led to a significant drop in electricity generation. These incidents underscore the vulnerability of coastal nuclear plants to changes in marine ecosystems. Experts warn that overfishing, plastic pollution, and rising ocean temperatures linked to climate change have created conditions favorable to jellyfish proliferation and reproduction. As global sea temperatures continue to rise, such ecological shifts could lead to more frequent disruptions in nuclear power operations. Scientists suggest that these factors are contributing to increased jellyfish activity in regions previously unaffected. The Gravelines incident highlights the broader implications of environmental changes on critical infrastructure. While the immediate effects on public safety appear minimal, the long-term consequences for energy reliability remain uncertain. With climate-related stressors intensifying, the frequency of such disruptions may increase, prompting calls for greater investment in adaptive measures and alternative cooling technologies for nuclear facilities.

Bias read (Center): Vijest se fokusira na tehnički i ekološki aspekti problema sa meduzama i nuklearnim elektranama, bez jasno izraženog političkog stajališta. Izvor informacija, Euronews, pruža neutralnu analizu, a komentari stručnjaka ne predstavljaju direktno političku poziciju, već naučne procjene. Stoga se ne može

Why factuality (95): The article accurately reports the shutdown of three reactors and reduction in output at a fourth at the Gravelines plant, citing EDF and AFP sources. It includes details from the primary source document such as the 15.6% shortfall, the six 900-megawatt reactors, and historical incidents in Sweden a

Why objectivity (90): The tone remains neutral, presenting facts without emotional language. However, there is a slight emphasis on the environmental factors contributing to jellyfish blooms, which could be seen as a minor editorial tilt towards climate concerns.
