Participants who engaged in these types of activities reported feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction when they became aware of how much time had been spent on their devices. One key finding was that the discomfort caused by realizing time has been lost does not immediately prompt users to stop using their phones. Instead, many continue scrolling in an attempt to distract themselves from the negative emotions. This cycle reinforces the problem, creating a loop of distraction and time distortion. Experts in cognitive psychology and digital hygiene recommend specific strategies to mitigate these effects. They suggest using traditional analog clocks or wall-mounted timepieces, which offer fewer opportunities for distraction. Additionally, they advise taking short breaks from digital devices, such as reading a book or having a face-to-face conversation, to restore a more accurate sense of time. A 20-minute period of uninterrupted analog activity has been shown to effectively counteract the effects of prolonged smartphone use. The findings highlight the growing impact of technology on human cognition and underscore the need for conscious efforts to maintain a balanced relationship with digital tools. As smartphones become increasingly integrated into daily life, understanding how they affect our perception of time becomes essential for preserving mental clarity and well-being.
