Scrapping at the expense of quality: buyers perceive this practice as covert and unfair

Raziskava, objavljena v reviji Journal of Consumer Research, prikazuje, kako potrošniki reagirajo na različne metode, s katerimi podjetja zmanjšujejo stroške.

Consumers increasingly perceive a growing trend among manufacturers, cutting product quality while maintaining price and packaging, as deceptive and unethical. This practice, termed "skimpflation," has emerged as a response to rising inflation and shrinking package sizes, according to research published in the Journal of Consumer Research. The study highlights how consumers react more negatively to reductions in product quality than they do to price increases or reduced quantities. The research compared three common cost-cutting strategies used by companies. Author Ramon Llull analyzed ten previous studies examining consumer responses to these practices. Participants were informed beforehand about how the products they evaluated had been altered due to cost reduction efforts. Results confirmed the researchers' hypothesis, that consumers view a decline in product quality as significantly more problematic than either price hikes or smaller packaging sizes. Llull refers to this phenomenon as the "penalty for skimpflation." Consumers not only see such products as less ethical but also have fewer chances of repurchasing them. One reason is the lack of transparency. Price increases are easily noticeable, as are reductions in product weight. However, changes in recipes often go unnoticed until after purchase or when comparing ingredient lists with older packaging. As a result, consumers often discover that a product is no longer the same only after buying it, leading them to label the practice as hidden and unfair. Consumer reaction depends heavily on exactly what was changed. Another factor influencing their response is familiarity with price increases and shrinkflation during inflation. These changes are expected, whereas alterations in quality are less obvious and thus provoke stronger negative reactions. The study showed that if a manufacturer replaces a key ingredient or changes something central to the product, such as taste, texture, or overall quality, consumers feel they are no longer purchasing the same item. In contrast, changes related to packaging or other minor elements elicit milder responses. Consumers who encounter such products do not just consider them less ethical, they are also less likely to buy them again. The findings do not necessarily mean that skimpflation is always a poor business strategy. Its success largely depends on whether consumers even notice the change. If the alteration goes undetected, the strategy might still yield benefits for the company. However, when consumers become aware of the reduced quality, the backlash can be severe, affecting brand loyalty and repeat purchases. The research underscores the importance of transparency in product modifications. Companies that alter ingredients or core attributes of their products risk damaging consumer trust. While some businesses may attempt to mask these changes through marketing or minimal packaging updates, the study suggests that such tactics are unlikely to prevent consumer dissatisfaction once the changes are discovered. The implications extend beyond individual consumer choices. Retailers and regulators may need to pay closer attention to how manufacturers adjust product formulations under economic pressure. Ensuring clear labeling and communication about changes could help mitigate consumer concerns. Meanwhile, brands that prioritize consistency and honesty in their offerings may find themselves better positioned to retain customer confidence amid ongoing economic challenges. As inflation continues to shape market dynamics, the balance between cost management and consumer expectations becomes ever more delicate. Businesses must weigh the potential risks of perceived dishonesty against the financial incentives of reducing production costs. Whether skimpflation proves sustainable will depend largely on how well companies navigate the fine line between economic necessity and consumer perception.
